Aleatico Alea Ludendo
The raisin wine tradition of the Minor Italian Islands reaches its utmost expression in the Aleatico wine of the Island of Elba. The namesake aromatic vine species with its red grapes, a member of the muscat wine family, produces a naturally sweet wine that is much appreciated by the most expert connoisseurs throughout the world.
Aleatico “Alea Ludendo” is solely made of grapes cultivated in Poggio Turco, at the tip of the Ripalte. This grape is harvested after complete maturation very early in September. It is then left to wither on grids for about one week, directly exposed to the sun. This procedure endows the wine with a decided character and remarkable personality. After a brief period of maceration, slow fermentation continues on the skins and comes to a natural halt due to the considerable content of residual sugars. Bottling takes place the summer after harvesting.
A few traits of this jewel. Intense garnet red with the typical hues of raisin wines, it has an aggressive olfactory impact. Rich in the primary scents of flowers and mildly caramelised fruit, it is a typical recollection of the naturally wholesome Mediterranean maquis. The palate feels its remarkable complexity with the sequence of fruit and rich jam flavours. The final perception is of an ideal balance between a sweet note and acidity, with a salty tang.
Besides being conventionally served with tarts and dry pastries, this Aleatico wine finds its choice companion in chocolate-flavoured cakes and pastries. What about a tip for a heady experience? Try it with sharp spicy cheese for a result that will leave you breathless.
